A leaking radiator should be fixed as soon as possible. If left there could be extensive water damage. Fortunately these leaks are simple to fix.
Starting from the top of the radiator check the bleed valves, It is important to start at the top as drips from bleed valves can drip onto the radiator valves, you may them assume that the radiator valve is leaking.
Using a piece of tissue wipe off any signs of water, then press the tissue around various points to locate the source of the leak.
Repairing a leaking bleed valve
- Use a bleed key to check the nipple is tight. If the leak is where the bleed valve meets the radiator then :
- Turn off the radiator valves at each end.
- Then remove bleed valve body from the radiator
- Wrap ptfe tape around the thread and replace.
Repairing a leak from the spindle
- Tighten the gland nut with a spanner. If it continues to leak then :
- Remove the gland nut
- Wrap ptfe tape around the spindle
- Replace the gland nut.
Repairing a leaking drain valve
If the drain valve is leaking, the washer probably needs replacing but you will need to drain the system to replace it.
- Drain the system,
- using a spanner open the drain valve and remove the spindle,
- Simply replace the worn rubber washer.
- Insert the spindle and re-fill.
Radiator leak caused by corrosion
Radiators can develop pinholes. It is advisable to replace the radiator in this case, as a bodged repair will not last.
Repairing a leak on a radiator valve nut
- Using a wrench hold onto the body of the valve, then with a spanner and tighten the nut until the leak stops. If the leak persists.
- Drain the system
- Remove the radiator valve
- Check olives for any damaged, You can replace the olives with a olive remover or wind ptfe tape around the damaged olive
Re-fill
