Are there any new products to fill gaps in a woodworking project?
I’ve glued two pieces of wood together after carving it as well as I could to match them up, but there are a couple of gaps I’d like to fill. The trick is I plan to stain the wood and want everything to match?
I understand there’s putty, but does that harden well enough to be sanded?
collect some of the sawdust used in this project. tape off your project, leaving only the gaps exposed. fill the bottom half of the gap with strait wood glue. now take your wood glue, mix a generous amount of the sawdust in it. fill the top half with the glue/sawdust mix using a putty knife. sprinkle some more sawdust on top, and press down with your knife. when its dry, it can be lightly sanded, and will take stain to match the rest of the project. this is meant for small gaps. also, you might want to try a test of this, because depending on the color of stain you use, the glue concoction may not stain the same. also, be careful not to get any of the glue on the raw wood, then that area wont take stain. this is something you can do after you stain the main part of the project, then go back and work on your gaps.
