How long does fresh cut wood take to dry to be used for furniture?
A friend of mine had a huuuuuge cherry tree that was removed from his property due to its proximity with power lines.
There are some great straight sections that I was thinking about cutting up with a chain saw and them taking them to the local saw mill.
After this wood leaves the saw mill, how long will it take for the moisture level to fall to an appropiate level to use the wood for furniture?
Air drying cherry will take awhile. If the have a kiln at the sawmill it will be ready in no time.
My guess is that your climate is much like the climate where cherry trees grow??? Central- North central united states? Some say you should wait up to a year, but it might over dry in that time. The best thing to do is to bring it into a sable environment and just keep your eye on it. 1 inch thick stock COULD be ready in 2 months or so. Target moisture content is around 20%.
I don’t know much about super small sawmills, but check to see what size logs they are willing to saw. The saw mill could probably give you a good estimate on drying time as well. And make sure you read the log carfully before you buck it up!
