Will I be able to repair my AC adapter by cutting the broken wire off and reconnecting the wires together?
Right after revising for my science exam, I came across a splendid idea. You see, I have this broken AC adapter because I accidentally damaged the wire… so the circuit is open. If I cut both edge and reconnect them, will the AC adapter work again? (Cut the broken part off, cut the insulator off of each edge, reconnect em’, place a new insulator on it)
I agree with your first response. I can only offer a little tip, the kind of wires used in these applications often have a color band on them, it simplifies the re-splicing problem.
For instance, with a two wire black lead, one of the two wires might have a white stripe on one side of the wire, so you can match up white stripe to white stripe.
If not, be sure the wire is flat, they can curl up and get twisted quite easily, and make sure you are working with the same side of the wire. So, if you have it perfectly flat against the table, the wire on your right will connect to the right side of the other end of the cable, if that wire is also perfectly flat.
If you have a continuity checker, you can check the connection before you plug it in.
A continuity checker is a lightbulb and battery, with a pointer on one end, then a wire, then a clip. If the clip is connected to one end of the wire you are splicing, and you touch the pointer to the other end of the wire, if it lights up, the connection is complete, and you know you have spliced the correct wire.
I’d watch those connections, 115 Volts AC can do a lot of damage. I recommend using some kind of wire nuts, they secure the connection, and insulate the connections from you and from each other.
I never use the twist and tape method for high voltage like that. I only use it for low voltage and current uses like a speaker wire or something.
