Geocaching – say what? It turns out that the usual response I get when I talk about my passion. Simply put, geocaching is an activity the whole family can enjoy using a little technology.
You'll need a GPS or a SatNav, a little energy and a some time, and you're set.
Okay, what is a geocache? In other words, it is a container with a pencil and logbook, which you sign when you find the cache. Most often, the cache will also contain a treasure of unequal value – an eraser cute a game, or, if you are really lucky, a travel bug. But more about that later.
The goal is to track the container, show that you have found signing the logbook, by logging your find on the site Groundspeak. If you like what you find in the cache, you can take. But be polite – always trade for equal or greater value. Then replace what brings you to something that can delight the next finder. Be creative and have fun.
There one application with trades – please be responsible.
- Absolutely never allow food in a cache, which includes candies of all kinds. The animals have a keen sense of smell and destroyed the cache to try to get inside goodies.
- Do not leave money in a secret either. There is no sense in encouraging vandalism.
- Be aware that Small children love to play the game and are the first to open the covers, to avoid any dangerous objects or potentially fatal.
Ah I hear you ask, what is a Travel Bug?
A travel bug is all that you do – a stuffed animal, a special stone or even a shell. Attached to this is a dog tag that has a unique series of numbers engraved which identifies the bug. The travel bug is registered on the site with its own Groundspeak page, given a description of its goals in the world tour, and is usually accompanied by his photo.
One of my travel bugs is called Gawain is a Lego Knight of the Order. He travels the world with his sword and shield, who want to see Tintagel Castle in Wales. More recently, it was him to Austria, where he enjoys the view from the highest mountain in Austria called the Grossglockner. He is en route to a cache near a airport so he could return to England and find the castle of his dreams, and perhaps the girl, too.
Caches are hidden in surprising places. I discovered many delightful places I did not know existed just by following a trail geocache. People who hide caches are ingenious in finding sneaky hiding places. Some are disguised as logs, other so well hidden in the bushes of gorse you almost do not dare go there. But the area that you are usually called beautiful or a certain size, so that the journey is always interesting.
