How come LED power is measured in Volts, not watts?
I will be using LED’s in an illuminated sign for a school project.
The LED’s I have researched measure power output in volts, not watts.
Why is this?
Does this mean, for example if I can only connect 12 (1V LED’s) to a 12Volt power supply?
Thanks for your assistance on this one !
Will a 12Volt battery support numerous sets of 12 LEDs (assuming they are 1Watt each) if they are connected in groups of 12 to battery without losing brightness?
1.LED power is measured in Watt ( or milli-watt).
2.LED has 1.6 volts; 2 volts and 3 volts forward voltage.
3.To maintain its brightness evenly, supply same current and same forward voltage to it.
4.Supply more current that it can take making it double the brightness but burning out in a short time or turning into a dim LED.
5.A resistor is required to drop the excess voltage if the power source is over its forward voltage rate.
6.Resistor value is calculated from its forward voltage,wattage and power source.
7.A power source either in AC or DC in 3 volts is able to light up any LED. Using higher voltage power source (if you can select) is a waste.
