How do i wire a 110 volt light with a switch from a 220 volt wire?
i got a 220 volt and was a heater in wall and i making it to a light with a light switch
Is this a now unused 240v circuit (the voltages are actually 120v and 240v, not 110/220), or is it still servicing a 240v appliance (the heater)?
If it’s still serviving the heater — don’t even try – you’ll create an unsafe wiring situation with shock and fire risks.
If it’s an unused circuit, you *might* be able to convert it – depending on how it was wired. A 240v circuit is actually 2 120v “hots”, 180 degrees out of phase. If all you have at the junction box is a red, a black (or possibly two blacks) and a ground – no white wire, then I wouldn’t recommend trying to split 120 out of it. If you DO have a neutral (white) along with the two hots, then you can create two seperate 120v circuits with what’s referred to as a “common ground”. From the junction box where the heater was, simply take one hot, the neutral and ground to your switch, and treat it as a regular 120v circuit. The two 120 circuits you’re creating from the 240v should carry as near to the same load as you can manage.
If you’re not familiar with the NEC and residential wiring standards, do get a book on residential wiring at your hardware store or library. While wiring a light switch is very much a DIY’able project, there are a lot of ways you could mess up if you don’t know what you’re doing, and the result of a botched job could be death or the destruction of your home.
