What brass instrument has a single large piston valve?
I found a brass instrument old mother-in-law of my basement. It is smaller than a tuba, but larger than a baritone and a single valve. I've never seen anything like it before, and I was looking. Tell me more about it so I can understand how to play. The valve appears to raise the note by about a fifth, but I never was a good brass player, so I'm not sure if I'm brimming well for the instrument. All tuba players out there have any advice?
Back in the 1970s, Drum and Bugle Corps used bugles of various sizes with a valve and a rotor (such as the use of French horns). That sounds like a bugle base or base-cons from that period or earlier. Today, modern trumpets used by the body has three valves.
