how does water pressure keep the gate diverter in a tub spout closed?
If you hold your thumb over a hose you can feel the pressure that the water exerts on it. The pressure in the tub spout on the diverter holds it in place, until either the pressure is reduced enough or the gate is pushed down. I find that sometimes even the column of water in the pipe up to the shower head will hold the diverter in place.
