how long should i leave my motorcycle battery on a trickle charger for?
A trickle charger and a battery TENDER or maintenance charger are two different beasts.
A trickle charger constantly feeds current to the battery, it serves no purpose once the battery is fully charged. From a dead state to full charge on a typical one stage trickle charger should take from 10 to 12 hours. Continuing to feed current to the fully charged battery can shorten the over all life span of the battery significantly.
A battery TENDER cycles off and on, it feeds current only when the battery has lost a certain amount of its full charge status, as in when it gets to 95% of full charge, the tender will cycle on, then cut off once the max charge level is reached. A properly working TENDER cannot damage your battery.
Of the two types the TENDER is the better choice for most applications. Neither of these units are very expensive, so cost should not be a factor in choosing one.
