What is the causes of past disappointments and the reasons of CASE Tools.?
“Software tools are, at last, beginning to fulfill the promises that were made on the 1980’s and 1990’s” : – based on this statement you have to answer the question
Well first of all, CASE tools allow programmers/designers to worry less about the details and work in a higher level of abstraction when creating systems. They also radically speed up development and provide designers with an overall plan and time line for projects.
Coming out of the structured programming era of the 1980′s and COBOL, the idea of object oriented programming was born. This ideology stated that if we were to modularize design we could take full advantage of code reuse, simplification of code, faster development, and more flexibility in design.
The idea was great, but very few tools were around that handled such a concept. With the progress of CASE tools, designers were able to start implementing much of those features.
Now a days, CASE tools are essential in large scale projects for planning timelines (Gantt charts like in Visio to help plan development efforts) and multi-layer design with Rational Rose (flow charts and ERDs). It has helped projects come in on budget, create larger systems, reduced the time and costs of a redesign (design flaws cost companies billions a year), and help code reuse which reduces bugs.
I have included a source to wikipedia which can give you some ideas of different case tools and help you expand my answer. For some past disappoints, simply look to the US governement and development of their computer/software systems. Even today the CIA/FBI are bogged down in a security system that has ran EXTREMELY over budget. The number one disappointment will be related to budget and how case tools have helped lower the bottom line to bring them within budget requirements.
