I found this in my Grandmother’s house. Obviously it’s a wood drill of some kind, but I would like to know exactly what it was used for. It’s hand-operated and the drill is adjustable. I couldn’t find any manufacturing marks.

That’s precisely what it is. You have quite a nice find there. I believe, from the look of the photos that this one is in quite a bit better condition than the one from the ruby lane shop. I’ve lived on two different farms throughout my lifetime, both of which had old barns hand hewn from trees, oak, hickory, maple, etc. They all had the the old pegs through the hand chiseled and fitted joints. You couldn’t find a screw or nail anywhere in them, unless one of us had driven one in somewhere to hang something on. I often stood in them, in utter awe of the time, effort and skill it took to build such structures, with such primitive tools. You’re certainly a lucky fellow, take good care of this item. It can do nothing but grow in value.
