Quantative Question. Titanium molar mass?
Titanium is a metal that is used in a variety of products, icluding jewelry, cookware, and golf clubs. Titanium is purified from the mineral titanium dioxide, TiO2(s), in a two way step process:
Step 1; TiO2(s) + 2Cl2(g) + 2C(s) —->TiCl4(g) + 2CO2(g)
Step 2: TiCl4(g) + 2Mg(s)—->Ti(s) + 2MgCl2(s)
How many grams of titanium can be obtained from 1.oo kg of titanium dioxide?
I am not sure cause they only give info on Titanium dioxide mass. PLEASE ANSWER AND EXPLAIN THE STEPS. THANK YOU
1. Convert the 1.00 kg of TiO2 to 1000 g.
2. Divide by the molar mass of TiO2 ( ~79.86 g) to change the grams to moles of TiO2.
3. By using the mole conversion ratios, you can see that 1 mole of TiO2 is equal to 1 mole of Ti (according to the balanced equations).
4. Multiply the number of moles of TiO2 by 1 (since 1 mole of TiO2 equals 1 mole of Ti).
5. Now you have moles of Ti, so multiply by the molar mass of Ti (~47.86 g) and you have your answer.
In other words,
1. 1000 g TiO2 / ~79.86 g TiO2 = 12.52 moles of TiO2
2. 12.52 moles of TiO2 X (1 mole of Ti / 1 mole of TiO2) = 12.52 moles of Ti
3. 12.52 moles of Ti X ~47.86 g = 599.3 approximately
