What are some tips when setting up a wireless router?
I just bought a Linksys Wireless Router. I’m trying to set up my network so that my desktop, laptop, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii can all go on the internet. Is there anything I should be aware of before starting to setup the router? Are there any tips for setting up the router?
I assume that the video consoles connect directly to the router (via ethernet), if not you may wanna look in google for xbox and wii port forwarding to make sure your devices connect correctly to the network (pardon my ignorance, I am not a gamer.)
Other than that:
- Enable the firewall that comes with the router (usually enabled by default.)
- Use some sort of packet encryption (wep, wpa, wpa2), if your network cards don’t support anything better than wep, still use it. Most people don’t know anything about capturing packets, decryption, and other hacky stuff.
- Enable MAC address filtering, allow only certain computers to connect to the wireless network based on the computers network adapters MAC addresses.
- Disable SSID broadcasting, once your computers are connected to the wireless network, go back to your router and disable this. This will prevent other people from trying to access your network by “hiding” its name.
