What that balance as AC everybody talks is supposed to be so great for TIG weld aluminum? And why should you give an ass rats? Well lets first make sure that we know does that is because, let's be honest, we could talk about air conditioning, aircraft, or half of the eighties rock group. AC refers to alternating current. AC: the direction of flow of electrical current alternates from negative to positive. The power you get when you plug a blender into the wall outlet is alternating current. DC or DC current flows indicates a one direction. the supply of batteries dc or dc. TIG machines are available in models strictly DC or AC / DC models. Models DC is great for steel, but you need AC and DC welding steel and aluminum. Why? Because alternating current allows the aluminum oxide to be melted down and kind of dissolved without overheating of the electrode. Half polarity AC power provides a so-called cathodic etch which is very useful on aluminum.
But lean on the reverse polarity just overheating the electrode at a point which makes it impossible. Welding on DC electrode negative as is done on steel is not working well because the aluminum oxide remains and it is impossible to see the puddle. Welding on AC is a kind of baby carrier like porridge .. Just as must! Just enough to keep the electrode negative electrode become too hot, and the cleaning action or cathodic etching half Unlike the CA breaks through the oxide to let you see the puddle.
But what does the balance AC? You adjusts the cleaning vs. penetration. Is there really a difference? In a word, Yes!

A material is clean with a polished finish and the other is highly oxidized, and probably even underground corrosion. Being able to adapt to more or less cleaning or penetration is a bit like having just the right size hammer for the job instead of with one that is too small.
How does it work? It is somehow possible to caricature, but as the parameter of reverse polarity and more cleaning action. The higher the value, the electrode negative and more penetration with a narrow strip of cathode burn marks.
Set it and forget it? If you are not interested by optimal settings for a particular job, a part of 7 with weld almost all pretty good.
