According to the Attorney General Acting Rita M. Glavin of the Criminal Division announced today a former member of the U.S. Army pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona in Tucson for his role in widespread corruption and extortion conspiracy.
The Laguna Journal reported in 2001, Operation Lively Green. " The charges arise from this operation as an undercover operation conducted by the FBI that began in December 2001. To date, 56 other defendants were sentenced for their role in the conspiracy lot of them active U.S. military.
Rommel I. Schroer, 33, a former sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, became the 56th defendant to plead guilty today a charge of conspiracy to enrich themselves by obtaining cash bribes from people he believed to be smugglers drug in exchange for aid, protection and participation in what he thought was an illegal organization of narcotics, traffic distributed cocaine from Arizona to other locations in the southern United States. In fact, drug traffickers have been infiltrated FBI agents.
According to court documents, in order to protect shipments of cocaine, Mr. Schroer and his co-conspirators were wearing military uniforms U.S. officials, carried official forms of identification, used official vehicles of the United States, where necessary, to avoid Police stops, roadblocks, searches and seizures of narcotics as they drove the cocaine shipments at checkpoints in the south-west States which were manned by the U.S. Border Patrol, the Arizona Department of Public Safety and officers under Nevada law.
The case is part of a joint investigation conducted by the Southern Arizona Corruption Task Force (SACTF), which is composed of the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Department of Homeland Security and the Tucson Police Department. The Arizona Air National Guard Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Defense Criminal Investigative Service and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service also participate in the investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorneys Michael Ferrara and Peter Koski of the function public, the criminal division of Integrity Section, headed by Chief William M. Welch II.
The Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma has also secured the guilty pleas of 14 defendants in a related investigation, Operation Tarnish Star.
