saltwater tank lid on or off?
i have a 29 gallon saltwater tank and someone told me to take the lid off because its better for the tank. what do i do?
if so how far should the light be from the tank?
I would say to keep it ON.
It slows the evaporation of water out of your tank, and this will keep the salinity levels more stable. This isn’t much of a problem if you have a large tank, but in nano tanks, it’s crucial to the well being of your fish.
Many saltwater species are known to jump out of a tank for unknown reasons. I lost a favorite fish of mine to this. Ever since, I’ve used a glass cover.
The only reasons I would see for keeping it off is is you use a metal halide, it may prevent the light from heating your water too high, or if people still believe that the cover in some way prevents as much light from reaching the corals. For reptiles, you’re told never to put glass or plastic between the light and the animals. But I haven’t found this to be a problem, If anything, a glass cover is easier to keep clean and keeps the salt away from your lights so there’s less buildup and corrosion.
