Why does my laptop go to sleep when I set my cellphone on it?

I recently had a scare when the back light on my laptop appeared to go out during the middle of a report...I was rather disappointed and restarted my computer and the problem seemed to disappear. But later I found that the incident repeated itself when my cellphone was set on the right hand side of my laptop and the antenna touched the bottom of the screen. I later found out that the computer was trying to enter sleep mode every time the cellphone got in this position. I assumed it had to do with conductive materials making a connection between the base of the laptop and the screen, so I tried other similar sized conductive objects and had no similar results. What is so special about a cellphone, and why does it react so oddly with my computer?

I have a Compaq laptop and a Motorola phone...I know it has something to do with how the laptop senses if it is closed or not...

When the phone and the laptop are both on and in close proximity although the phone is not in use as such it is still in contact as it were with the nearest cell phone mast.

So therefore obviously the phone output is influencing the laptop. Just keep them apart by a couple of feet or so! Interesting find though! Have to bear that one in mind!
