How fo I figure out the pounds per square inch of a 400 lbs table with 4 legs?
I am designing a table and need to know how many “legs” or supports I need in order to fall underneath the 50lbs per square inch limit set forth by our engineers.
If I was figuring out the pounds per square foot – would I just mulitply by 12?
Measure the area of one FOOT of the table. Divide the weight of the table by the total surface area of the four feet and you have the psi for all four feet. Or, since you have a limit of 50 psi, you need at least 8 square inches of surface area for all of the feet. Since you have four legs, that translates to 2 sq inches per leg. Depending on the material you use, a 2 sq inch foot area may not be feasible.
