Switch White
I am putting in a new light switch. I have one white wire, one black wire and one red wire. How do I hook up?
The argument over whether it is a three way switch (SPDT) or a standard two way switch (SPST) can easily be answered. Do you have two switches controlling the light, like one at each end of the hall or top and bottom of the stairs? If so, this is a three way switch. Following some of the instructions above will trip your circuit breaker for sure, so be careful. You could look at the switch at the other end of the circuit to see how it is wired and copy that wiring for two of the colors, but the third color will most likely be different on each end of the circuit. We have several places in our house where 14-3 wire was used for two circuits with a common return, so the answer isn’t always straightforward.
