Strainer Stopper
Once you have got the homebrewing technique down you may be up for a bigger challenge. You may be looking for a more hands on approach which calls for more specialized equipment. The following is list of brewing equipment an intermediate level homebrewer would need.
Glass carboy: Carboys are large cylindrical jugs, it will need to be glass not plastic. The main use for a glass carboy in brewing is a secondary fermenter, where your beer will age and mature.
Rubber stopper: A rubber stopper is to airlock the fermenter tight while fermenting the beer.
Airlock: May not be necessary but comes in handy if you need a second airlock in your brewery.
Carboy Brush: This brush is designed for cleaned every curve and corner of the carboy. The brush should be a heavy duty, soft-bristle brush.
Racking tube: Racking is the process of transferring beer from one vessel to another.
Funnel: The opening of the carboy may be small so a good funnel is handy to have around. I suggest using one with an opening of at least 8 inches.
Kitchen Strainer: Since you will be adding loose grain, hops and other ingredients to your brewpot, a strainer will become a necessary piece of equipment. Food grade steel mesh is preferred that plastic; also don’t get a strainer with a diameter of less than 10 inches.
Sparge Bags: Sparge bags are effective for steeping grain or keeping whole leaf hops under control in the brewpot.
Lab Immersion Thermometer: Since temperature control becomes more important when brewing at the intermediate level, you will want to have a immersion thermometer in you brewery. A good quality immersion thermometer is capable of reading temperatures above the boiling point.
Grain Mill: The grain mill is to crack the grain prior to brewing with it. You can buy pre cracked grain but many homebrew suppliers don’t crack it properly. A coffee grinder is not recommended as your grain ends up looking like sawdust.
Kitchen or postal scale: One you start brewing beer according to specific recipes, you may find that you need many ingredients in small quantities. A good kitchen scale will measure fractions of ounces.
