Why does acid turn metal pink?
Specifically CLR cleaner, it’s a strong acid used around the house, and anything metal that I dip into it turns pinkish. This goes for rusty steel hand tools that I am cleaning, or a brass door knob (which has probably some form of iron or steel inside).
I would love to know the chemical reactivity of this layer of pink – is it an oxide that will inhibit rust? Will it wear off easily?
My answer is based on your terms, “dip into it”. I picture a tub of this stuff that you put items in to clean. Here is whats happening,,when you dip brass you are pulling out some of the copper in the brass. The next few pieces you dip get plated with a real thin film of copper. You are doing electroplating on some level. This is sort of common knowledge in the band instrument industry with acid baths. If the plating too heavy, it is time to change the bath. If you used new cleaner everytime I don’t think this would happen, no copper in it.
Yes, it is very thin and wears off quickly, I buff it off.
