Paint or stain pre-finished furniture?
I bought a wood bench from Walmart that upon arrival was too light to match my furniture. I decided to stain it using Minwax Wood Finish, foolishly not realizing that the piece should be sanded first. It has dried over 8 hours and appears to be dry to the touch, but when rubbing it very hard with a paper towel the stain will come off on the towel a bit.
What are my options at this point? Do I sand the piece and re-stain it? Is there some sort of top coat I can put on it now that will protect it and stop the stain from coming off when rubbed with a paper towel?
Should I have used (or should I now use) the Minwax Gel Stain rather than the Minwax Wood FInish? Or should I just prime it and paint it? Do all my options involve sanding?
You’re best bet is to use an electric palm sander to remove all finish. You might actually want to unbolt the whole thing and refinish each piece separately. Stain, wiping away excess after each application. After stain is thoroughly dry, apply about two or three coats of polyurethane and wait a couple days before handling. Remember to do all this on plastic in a well ventilated room. You might want to set up wires for hanging the pieces while they dry.
