Smartkey Handle
What is causing my Smartkey to lock & unlock my C230K’s doors only half the time?
I have a 2002 Mercedes C230K. Smartkey was working perfectly until a few months ago. Now it doesn’t like to lock or unlock my doors, especially from the driver’s side. Works better from passenger side (when holding the SmartKey right next to the door handle), but still doesn’t work 100% of the time. I replaced the batteries, which didn’t fix the problem. Even worse, if I can’t get it to unlock with the SmartKey, I have to manually unlock, which sets off the alarm. Any ideas? Thanks!!
Unlike most cars using infra-red receivers, a Smartkey mainly uses a frequency signal with infra-red as a secondary function.
What this means is, you should not have to point this key at the car at all if things are working correctly.
When you press the unlock button on your key it sends a signal which is to be detected by an internal antenna that is mounted to the upper left (driver side) of the rear window.
Point your key at this point of your rear window and see if this helps you for the time being.
The componants that could cause the problem you describe are expensive to just take a shot at but my first guesses are the key itself and the antenna I mentioned above.
Do you have a second key to try? If not I would get a key first as you should have a spare anyway.
If not resolved the car will have to have it’s codes read at a dealer, like I said the price of guessing the part it needs is too high.
Also- To check the battery of a Smartkey press a lock or unlock button and a small red led below left of the panic button will light up if battery is good.
