How do you create realistic water on a scale model?
I am creating a scale model of the Titanic sinking, however I have no idea how to create the water. I was first going to use textured glass, but I would like something more realistic. What is the best way to do this? I am working with a work surface of about 40in x 20in and with a model of the ship about 30in long and 4in wide.
Go to woodlandscenics.com, they sell a material that is basicaly small beads that you melt over a hot stove. Prepare the base with a coat of dark blue paint, then add layer after layer of the melted beads to creat transparent, realistic water. You can add more color in between layers (green and lighter bluess) on just a small area or two to give a great effect. As the material cools it hardens. While it is cooling you can mold it to make wakes in front of and behind the ship. You can also create waves. Add a little white paint and poke the tops of the waves with the brush handle and you have realistic white caps!
