Set Titanium
Will a titanium prosthesis set off metal detectors? If so, will my orthopedist give me a certificate?
Titanium metal has very weak paramagnetic properties, meaning it will not set off metal detectors, as most of them make use of these in order to detect metals. There even was a press release, regarding a reporter which successfully evaded the airport security at JFK, while carrying a 8-inch-long piece of titanium, and there were several comments regarding this possible major flaw, as the market is full of titanium knives of different types.
However, given the fact that the methods of metal detection are subjected to change without notice, it would be recommended to have a copy of legal medical documents on you, regarding the prosthesis, should the authorities request it.
