Set Retail
Can one ever negotiate prices in a furniture retail store? Or, is the price “set” and it’s not proper to ask?
I’m not sure of shopping “ettiquette” when it comes to sofas, end tables, etc. Thanks!

You can “negotiate” with any business to see if you can lessen the price. I’ve had success in many places. At Lowe’s for example, you can negotiate the delivery charge..same for appliance stores. They knocked 50 bucks off my refrigerator since I brought it home myself.
To heck with etiquette. These salespeople you deal with aren’t getting rich selling on the floor. They all try to save money themselves. If they look at you funny or try to embarrass you, it’s because they’re trying to protect their commission.
Don’t ever shy away from trying to be frugal with your hard-earned money. It’s all in how you ask.
I’ve never run across an industry published book on how to haggle a better price for cars, or sewing machines, or farm equipment.
The best thing is to learn to be creative and put yourself on the other side of the desk or counter. Figure out ways that they could cut costs if they were trying to cut a deal for their mother.
If you’re not dealing with the boss or person in a position to cut a corner, then find the person that can. Sometimes there really is very little they can do, in which case, throw in something else on from the store that may be presently on sale, or clearance, etc.
Remember, think creatively.
