Set Mechanic
For basic car repairs as a weekend mechanic what tools should I buy?
I know something about car repair and want to start doing minor things at home. A friend said I can go to Wal-Mart and get a set of Stanley auto tools. Are they adequate, or do I need Craftsman, Snap-On or Mac Tools? Your answers are appreciated!
First thing I would recommend is a code scanner. Newer cars use OBD-II, so this is a must. A good socket set, standard and metric, with extensions and u-joints is required, along with a complete set of screwdrivers and wrenches. Craftsman are cheaper than Snap-on or Mac, but the quality is not what it once was. A torch and an impact wrench/compressor will make your life easier. You will need a good hacksaw, Channellocks and Vise Grips (get those brands for best results), and a lot of specialty tools you can buy as needed. It’s hard to say what you will need specifically without knowing what types of repairs you plan to do. Hope this helps.
