Set Lever
I just got a new set of Hope Mini disc brakes and I want to make the lever feel firmer?
I know that bleeding disc brakes will firm things up. For example, If the system requires 10cc of DOT braking fluid could I put in say, 10.5 or 11cc of fluid so the lever (what I would think) would have less movement toward the bar. I don’t know how to bleed brakes and I know about the little adjuster on the brake lever but I just want to know if there is an additional way to do things. I hope I am explaining myself. Thanks
What you might consider doing before you rebleed the levers is taking the wheel out of the drops, squeezing the lever once (to bring the calipers together a little), then replacing the wheel and realigning the caliper. This will bring the pad contact out (away from the bar), meaning the pad will contact the disc with a shorter lever pull. It won’t necessarily affect the stiffness of the lever, but it may make the braking more comfortable.
Bleeding a brake is pretty easy, though, if you decide that’s what you want to do; you just need a kit to do so, and the proper brake fluid. As far as lever adjustment goes, usually there is a little bolt on the back side of the lever pivot that you can screw in to push the lever away from the bar as well. I would try that next, before rebleeding the line; that would be my third option, but it’s not all that difficult, and there are plenty of instructional videos that you can use to show you what to do.
