Homeowners: I’m looking for a new garage door opener, what do you recommend?
I had a Craftsman from Sears, about 81/2 years old & broke. Reading about garage doors, there are chain, belt, and something else. So what do you recommend that is a decent opener at a decent price. Craftsman, Genie, liftmaster, what? What do you have & like & why like it? THANKS!
Chamberlain, Liftmaster, and Sears are all made by Chamberlain. Essentially the same motor units, but Liftmaster uses one-piece rails, and the others have 5 piece rails, so they fit in a box. If you want to do it yourself, shop around. Liftmaster is only available through garage door companies, but most sell them out the door. I’d recommend a 3/4 HP belt drive, from any of the three. Belt drive is quiet and reliable (lifetime warranty on belts), and the 3/4 HP units usually have a better warranty than a 1/2 HP.
Stay away from Genie. They used to make a reliable unit, but no longer. Specifically, the three-piece rail assembly uses little clips to hold the screw-sections together-junk. Where the screw attaches to the motor shaft, they use a fiber adapter-they wear out easily. I stopped selling them years ago; too many problems. Wayne-Dalton-junk.
Another thing-beware the so-called experts in home centers. While some (usually older guys) are truly knowledgable, most are 20-year-olds who know nothing other than what they’ve learned in sales workshops. They’re told what products to push, and how to push them. They’ll assure you how great this or that is, but they’ve never ACTUALLY worked in the field.
