Review of the Fein MultiMaster
The Fein MultiMaster is a multi-purpose tool that is indispensable if you’re planning to carry out a renovation or interior construction project. The MultiMaster tool can be used in a variety of home improvement jobs whether it’s renovating the bathroom, installing tile, trimming wood, cutting lumber, building intricate models, or constructing an entire new wing of your home. The Fein MultiMaster comes with many accessories that can help you not only get the job done, but get it done in less time.
There are four models of the MultiMaster that are available in the market depending on their features and the number of accessories available with each model: The FMM 250Q Basic, the FMM 250 Start, the FMM 250Q Select, and the FMM 250Q Top.
The Fein MultiMaster features “Quick In,” unique clamping system that allows users to quickly change accessories. Hence the Q in the model names. Of course, this feature is very handy since the MultiMaster is essentially a multi-purpose tool and if you can’t change the accessories quickly the tool may not prove to be as useful. For this reason, it is advisable to go for the models featuring this system rather that the 250 Start. Although the 250 Start is the cheapest model, the 250Q Basic only costs $60 more but its value is immensely more. So if you are going to spend more than $200 for a multi-purpose tool, you might as well get one that will be more useful.
So which model should you buy? Here’s a brief description about the main difference in the models. Between the Q Basic, the Q Select, and the Q Top, the main difference is in the accessories that come with the tool.
FMM 250Q Basic: The Q Basic is of course, the most basic kit available. All you get with this kit is the MultiMaster tool and its case. If you want any accessories, you will have to buy them separately. You can buy this model if you already have some tools and accessories that can fit on the end of the MultiMaster. Otherwise you’d be better off getting a model that comes with the accessories you’ll need.
FMM 250Q Select: The Q Select model comes with the MultiMaster tool, a 29 mm Saw Blade, Sanding Pads, a Scraper Blade, Key and Mounting Bolts, a Carbide-Tip Segment Saw Blade, and an HSS Segment Saw Blade. With the accessories available with this model, you can accomplish a variety of your home improvement or renovation jobs. However, it is a good idea to keep in mind just what sort of tools that you need to make the selection between the Q Select and the Q Top. It should be noted that the Q Select does not come with a case, so you will either have to go without one or purchase your own case.
FMM 250Q Top: The Q Top comes with all of the accessories included with the Q Select, and additionally a number of perforated Sanding Sheets, a Dust Extraction Device, a triangular Carbide Rasp, and the carrying case. In short this model comes with every accessory available by Fein that is manufactured to fit on the MultiMaster tool. Because the Q Top comes with the incredibly useful triangular carbide rasp and the sturdy carrying case, I would have to say that it is easily the best value.
When choosing the right Fein MultiMaster for you, you have to weigh the cost of the particular model against the accessories that come with it. Due to the number of extremely useful accessories and a case that come with the 250Q Top model, I would strongly suggest you bite the bullet and buy this model instead of buying accessories later on. This would not only save you money but you will also end up saving a lot of time and hassle in the long run. Sure you can buy the basic unit first and then get the accessories later when you need them, but there is nothing more irritating than being in the middle of a job and finding out that you have to make a trip to the hardware store. Even worse, the hardware store may not have the accessory you need and then you would have to order it online. If you value your time at all, you know how much of a hassle and a time waster that chasing after the right tool is.
Pros of the Fein MultiMaster
Assuming you get the 250Q Top, there are a lot of positives to using the MultiMaster instead of separate tools. First, Fein knows how to make oscillating tools. The MultiMaster is of the finest quality, professional oscillating tool available in the market. Many people complain that multi-purpose tools are of low quality since they can be used to perform a lot of different functions. However, this is just not true for the MultiMaster. With the saw, you can cut right through windows, cut tile with ease, and do all of the required sanding work. For many do-it-yourselfers, these jobs can be very hard and labor intensive, but using the MultiMaster you can accomplish tasks quite easily. Furthermore, the MultiMaster can help you do a lot of small tasks that you will not normally anticipate in the planning stages. So the Multimaster will prove to be a lot more useful than you may think it would. It can satisfactorily perform almost every small job that crops up around the house. I find myself popping it out every few weeks. Every so often, I have to dig through my pile of accessories to get the right tool, but the right one is there every single time. This is why I am so happy with the Top model, and why I highly recommend you get it if you decide to buy a Fein MultiMaster.
Cons of the Fein MultiMaster
The only downside of the MultiMaster is the high price tag. For four hundred dollars, you can buy a lot of tools, or a much cheaper multi-purpose tool. The Multimaster does provide convenience, but you won’t really feel that you’ve gotten your money’s worth until a few months after you’ve bought it. Additionally, you will need to buy replacement blades as the years pass, and these can run you quite a bit of money.
Also, the MultiMaster gets a lot hotter than you expect it would. It gets so hot that you need to take breaks every so often, even if you are wearing gloves.
However, in spite of these cons, the MultiMaster tool can perform many jobs better than specialized tools. For this reason, and its overall versatility, it is very hard for you to go wrong by buying one of these. If you do make a purchase, get the Fein MultiMaster 250Q Top. You really will use just about every accessory that comes with this model.
