Ring Tool
Is it possible to create a ring light effect without the ring light tool!?
I could try and make one, but if that doesn’t work, are there any camera flash or other settings which could come close to that effect. Could you also maybe providing lighting details. Do stobes work better that continous lights with this effect? Light and camera angles….etc. Thanks
There are brackets on the market that allow 2 or more flash units to be mounted that are held to either side of the lens, like at 3 and 9 o’clock. These are awkward at best and tend to be bulky and nose end heavy, but they DO work…..
Ring lights, available at many camera stores and on line don’t have to cost all that much. Name brand ones DO as well as ones giving TTL metering, but some start under $100 US and go up from there..

I have a very inexpensive one that is called – Pro Master – but believe me, there is nothing “pro” about it. I think it was like $89.98, but the thing is, It works..! However, because I DO indeed like to do close ups of all kinds of things, from roving a female body like the Mars Rover, taking snaps here and there to itty bitty wild flowers and such I went ahead and acquires a GOOD device for such..
Nikon made a series of what were called – Medical Lenses – that had the ring flash and focus light all built in. These were the Medical Nikkors. I believe Canon made one or two too..

The 120mm Medical Nikkor is the most recent (but discontinued) lens in this field. When new it was a easy $2500.00 but I bought one like new for $300 on eBay. They are NOT auto anything, other than the flash setting which is mechanically coupled to the focus ring which is also the f/stop ring. You set a ASA (ISO) ring to the speed of film, or your digital camera and away you go. You supply the focus and have your camera on M with a shutter speed to match that of electronic flashes.
Now, if it is just the lighting EFX you want to re-produce and not use a ring light for any kind of close-ups you may want to try what is called – Bare Bulb – shooting. This is where the electronic flash tube is “bare” .. NOT in a housing or with a reflector behind it. Sun Pack made them years ago and maybe still do. You ‘could’ make one if your handy with a few tools and soldering gun. Buy a inexpensive flash and gently take it apart. Do NOT add batteries or turn it on. You can get a NASTY shock from the high voltage capacitor inside, like that of a stun gun..! Find the wires that attach to each end of the flash tube and extend them a few inches each with like wire.
Have a test tube handy and slide the flash tube into the test tube having the wire going behind the flash tube from what will be the front. You don’t want the wire to cast a shadow out onto your subject. Now put the flash back together with the test tube sticking up, attached with a wad of silicone rubber cement or by any means you see fit. The idea here is to have the flash tube INSIDE the glass test tube and the test tube sticking up so when it goes off the light can cover 360′ as well as up.
Bare bulb lighting is unique in it’s own right and offers a look not seen too much today anymore. The light is coming from many different angles, at once, so many shadows are not harsh and the light is also reflecting off the room your in giving it’s slight color cast to the subject.
Depending on what your trying to photograph, electronic flashes are good because they do not produce room heat as studio lights can. But even here you can use a – bare bulb – and get some of the same EFX. Use a lamp with it’s shade removed and screw in a 100 or higher watt lamp (photo floods can go from 250 to 500 watts) and by placing the lamp in the room where you want, you can have a interesting lightning EFX on your model..
