Anyone else out there with OCD?
What kind do you have and how do you deal with it? I obessively wash my hands, i’m constantly worried about touching anything, door knobs, keyboards in public places, faucet handles. I have rigid cleaning and bathing rituals. It’s driving my family insane. My mother is constantly trying to get me to stop, but it neevr turns out could. One time she made me not wash my hands after touching somthing i dont remeber what and I had a violent shaking fit and threw up.
Anyone else out there with severe OCD? How do you deal? How do you get your family to understand?
I do see a therapist, but not to directly stop OCD habits, she thinks that if I fix the emotional problems the OCD will go away, but its’just getting so bad that I wanted to know what some other people do. Thanks so much everythign has been really helpful so far!
You don’t mention if you have tried to get professional help for dealing with this. There are some therapies which help people with OCD better cope with this disorder. And professionals who understand OCD could also help your family better understand what you are dealing with and why you can’t just stop doing what you are doing. You need to support from outside your family. Often, there is a genetic component to OCD, so you may not be the only person in your family who has ever had this problem. (There is a strain of this in my family, but it involves the hording impulse instead of the washing impulse.) One thing that could help with your family, if you get cable, is to watch the show “Monk” on the USA Network. He’s a detective who suffers from OCD. Even though it’s fiction, it might help your family get some perspective on what your life is like and may make it easier for you to talk to them. Also, they need to understand that you are not unique, that a lot of other people share your problem.
