Retractable Air
Do retractable owners ever cycle the gear in the air?
I saw a well known video on youtube where the guy belly landed a King Air. It was an incredible landing as he hovered over the runway as long as possible with no flare and props almost stopped. He did such a great job the plane could be repaired. With such anomalies that have happened with retractable gear, and considering maintenance schedules, etc., etc. , I’m pretty sure if I owned a Cherokee, or Beech model, that I would want to check somewhere in flight by slowing at high altitude, put on flaps 20 or whatever and simply cycle the gear. Maybe just doing that so often would work out any glitches in the cowl, or actuator, and also help distribute lubricant as well. I don’t see where it would hurt by any means, because it wouldn’t. Does anyone ever do this?
I’ve only ever cycled the gear in air as part of a training procedure, or when I’ve had trouble with the landing gear(once.)
If you know you have difficulty with your gear, they really roll out the red carpet for you. (They gave me half of Minneapolis international once, and about six fire trucks.)
