What do I do when my himalayan cat pulls out his clumps of matted fur?
My himalayan cat gets matted so badly, and instead of letting us try to brush them out, he pulls them out when we’re gone or asleep, so we find a large clump of matted fur on the floor and a large bald spot on his neck. He doesn’t seem in pain or anything, but I’ve been putting neosporin on the spots that are bloody, which someone told me to do. How do I get him to not pull out his clumps?

How is someone else a “dumb girl” when YOU’RE the one trying to BRUSH a longhaired cat???
You should NEVER use a brush on a longhaired cat! Brushes do very little to remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and rip out and break the topcoat hairs. A comb will gently remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and leave the topcoat intact. Himalayans and Persians should be combed at least every other day ALL YEAR LONG.
If the grooming’s been neglected so long that the cat has bad mats then the only thing that can be done is taking it to a groomer EXPERIENCED WITH CATS or a vet to clip the mats out. Keep up with the grooming to prevent this in the future.
Don’t hesitate to get this poor cat taken care of. Mats are VERY painful as they tighten and pull on the skin.
