How to properly vent an attic in South Louisiana?
The powered ventilation fan in the attic of my new house does not work. The house is about 40 years old. I went to replace it and after speaking with a few people decided to reaplce the electric fan with a whirly bird wind turbine. my questions are a few…Does a whirly bird need wind to work, or does the hot air rising make it spin? How many 14″ whirly birds should I install for a 1500 sq ft house with limited attic space? Is there any way to see if there is good/enough air flow coming from soffits? During the night, I can set the temp to72 and it clicks on and off, but off more, so it is good. During the day, the AC runs ALL DAY LONG, whether I set it at 72 or 76. The house will not get under 74 during the day. I am in the process of installing a radiant barrier and blowing in insulation, but I am so confused as to proper ventilation in the attic. They say 1 ft of venting for every 150 ft of space…how do I figure everything out? Every website says to do different things. Thanks
Someone on This Old House installed a solar powered attic fan. I was amazed at how easy it was to install and how well it worked.
Solar powered attic fans run great because they’re on your roof facing the sun. Plus, you don’t have to worry about electrical outlets or wiring. And they work best when you need them the most–when the hot sun is beating down on your roof.
They’re a bit more expensive than electric solar attic fans, but I think you’ll make it up pretty quickly.
