Poplar Paint
What material should I use to trim out windows?
I am trimming out the windows in a new addition (interior) and not too sure what material to use. All the trim will be painted white (semi-gloss).
What do most carpenters use? fingerjoint pine? pine? poplar? something else?
What thickness is most common? 3/4″ actual, 1″ actual, 5/4 actual?
What about width? 41/2?
For the windows sill, is another type of wood used?
Is the sill typically thicker?

Since you are going to paint it it doesn’t matter what you use. Wood, wood composites or plastic will work equally well. The only difference will be price. 2 things to consider: plastic trim comes in white so if you like the shade you don,t have to paint it. And poplar takes paint extremely well.
As far as the dimensions of the trim, that is strictly a matter of your choice. I recently put solid wood trim around doorway in my home and I used 8 in wide lumber for the sides and 12 in for the header.I did this because I wanted a bold look. The sides I carved into fluted columns and the top I inlaid with a different color wood for the contrast. Also I used 2 in thick lumber to make it really stand out. But that is in my house. In your home use what you want.
Window trim comes in various widths, 1 3/4 is the narrowest I have seen, and various thicknesses, depending on the profile of the trim. Thinner and narrower is cheaper but don’t necessarily go with the cheapest way. Remember that you will be looking at that window for years so make it look as nice as your budget allows.
Since the sill is seen edge on its thickness is visible so you might want to go with a thicker wood.
