How much does Air India charges for an extra piece of baggage?
First you need to know what are the baggage allowances; given below are some essential information on this subject; while flights between US and other places follow a PC system, others follow an excess weight system (regardless of the number of pieces of baggage)
Baggage exceeding in size, the sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) in excess of 45 inches or 115 centimeters, cannot be treated as hand baggage and will have to be checked in.
Air India allows the following baggage allowances
First Class 40 Kilos
Executive Class 30 Kilos
Economy Class 20 Kilos
The maximum weight permissible for a single piece of baggage is 32 kgs. This rule is applicable on the entire Air India network.
Checked Baggage allowance for USA/CANADA:
Free Baggage allowance for USA/CANADA is as follows:
First Class and Executive Class:
Free Baggage Allowance: 2 pieces.
The sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) must not exceed 62 inches or 158
centimeters for each piece.
The maximum weight permissible for a single piece of baggage is 32 kgs or 70 pounds.
Economy Class:
Free Baggage Allowance: 2 pieces
The sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) of both must not exceed 107 inches. Moreover the linear dimension of each piece should not exced 62 inches.
The weight of each bag must not exceed 50 pounds or 23 Kilos.
Infants in all classes:
Free Baggage Allowance: 1 piece
The sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) must not exceed 45 inches or 115
centimeters.
In addition they are entitled to 1 collapsible stroller/carrycot/infant car seat.
Please Note:
The following items will be considered as part of your checked in baggage allowance and must not exceed 62 inches or 158 centimeters – sleeping bag or bedroll/rucksack/knapsack/back-pack/fishing kit/sporting arms/snow-skis/water skis/golfing kit/fishing kit/wheelchair or assistive devices that the passenger is dependant upon.
Infants are allowed 10 Kilos checked in baggage but are not entitled to a seat. One checked or carried collapsible stroller or carrycot or bassinet or car seat for infant can be carried in the passenger cabin subject to availability of space.
Child fares are entitled to the same baggage allowance as adults.
Incapacitated passengers may carry one wheelchair or other assistive devices.
Excess baggage fares follow the principle of 1.5% of the economy fare for sectors between India and other locations (i.e. other than US);
Excess Pieces
In case a Passenger is carrying more number of pieces than allowed, the additional piece(s). Will be weighed and excess baggage charged on the basis of excess baggage rate per kilogram
Excess Weight
In case the number and size of the pieces of baggage is within the allowance as per the piece Concept, but the weight is more than the permitted weight, excess baggage would be charged on the basis of excess baggage rate per kilogram.
Oversized Baggage
In case weight of the baggage is within the allowance but the baggage is oversized, i.e more than the specified dimensions, a flat charge for 10 kgs. On the basis of excess baggage rate per kilogram would be levied. Any baggage the sum outside linear dimensions of which exceeds 203 cms (80″), will not be accepted as a part of free baggage allowance and will be weighed and excess baggage charged on the basis of excess baggage rate per kilogram for the entire piece of baggage.
Oversized and Excess weight Baggage
In case a baggage is both oversized (within 203 cms ) and overweight, a charge for 10 Kgs will be made for the excess size and a separate charge for excess weight will be made on the basis of excess baggage rate per kilogram.

iv) To/ from other cities in US – USD 133.00 per piece.
b)Trans-Pacific
i) USA/ India – To/ from Alaska/ Hawaii – USD 109.00 per piece.
To/ from Los Angeles/ Portland/ San Francisco/ South East Asia – USD 121.00 per piece.
To/ from other US Cities – USD129.00 per piece.
c)Canada/India – Trans-Atlantic
To/ from Manitoba/ Saskatchewan – CAD185.00 per piece.
To/ from Alberta/ British Columbia
Northwest Territory and Yukon – CAD 196.00 per piece
To/from points other than listed above – CAD173.00 per piece
