When we hear the words “emergency preparedness” we immediately think of 911, the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States. A majority of the 2,973 victims of this horrific disaster were civilians.
Other possible disasters we need to be prepared for are incidents we really don’t want to think about ever happening in our communities, chemical or hazardous material emergencies, a nuclear power plant emergency and especially bioterrorism.
And then, depending on what part of the country or world we live in, we also need to be prepared for mother nature’s afflictions like tornadoes, winter storms, an earthquake, flooding, a tsunami. Even more emergencies such as wildfires, extreme heat, a landslide or a volcano erupting are disasters we need to be ready for.
The Ten Most Important Things to Remember for Emergency Preparedness are:
- Become informed about being prepared for an emergency at the ready.gov website
- Decide on a predetermined location where you will meet and discuss it with all family members.
- Get an emergency supply kit and fill it:
- The kit should include enough food, water, paper plates plastic ware, and moist towelettes, for three days.
- A radio, flashlight, batteries, can opener, tools, cell phone and charger go in the supply kit too.
- Remember cash, medications, important documents, insurance cards.
- Have an extra change of clothing for everyone and diapers for baby.
- Disinfectant wipes and matches are important items also.
- A kit with first-aid items, like aspirin, bandages, tape, thermometer, etc. is of the utmost importance.
- Put enough silver shield gel and liquid into your first-aid kit to treat all topical injuries and internal infections. A silver sol solution can be used as a preventive supplement also to strengthen the immune system and shield from infections. Water can also be purified with a few drops of the silver sol liquid or you can spray it on surfaces to destroy all bacteria, viruses and mold.
Be sure to check the ready.gov website for additional suggestions on how to prepare for a natural disaster or emergency.
