Causes Leading To Electrical Fires
Electrical fires are dangerous, damaging and deadly. Bill Lutz is an electrician with Generation 3 Electric in Philadelphia. According to him, many electrical fires are caused by old and outdated electrical systems, as well as by fuse boxes overloaded by the surge of electricity.
Outdated electrical systems
Old systems don’t apply to the type and amount of power that is commonly in use today. Old wires have much lower safety standards and are probably victims of natural wear and tear. Breakers and fuse boxes that are out of date can be overloaded and become alight if there is a surge. Several types of old electrical panels (such as Federal Pacific and Pushamatic) carry lots of federal safety warnings.
Overusing extension cords
If you have many splitters and extension cords running all over the house and lots of appliances plugged in, you probably don’t have enough circuits to handle the power you are trying to use. This type of carelessness can lead to an overload or a fire, so use appropriate outlets and quality surge strips instead of splitters.
Careless installation
Usually contractors will offer to do electrical work at a cheap rate in addition to other jobs they are hired to do, which is sometimes a fatal mistake. Licensed electricians know all the proper safety precautions; however, lay contractors don’t. So make sure to hire a licensed and reputable electrician rather than a contractor. Though you may save a little bit of money in the short term, it won’t be worth it if your house burns down in an electrical fire.
Overloaded circuits
People are putting too much demand on circuits that were not designed for it. Older houses that have old power circuits and new appliances use a lot more electricity. Be sure to follow the electrical safety standards to assure that your eletrical systems are not overloaded, which can lead to a fire. For example, if your microwave oven and coffeemaker are plugged into the same outlet, your breakers might be damaged, and circuits can be overloaded and cause a fire. Cracked outlets or broken switches may be dangerous, too.
Get your electric system inspected regularly to insure that everything is up to date to you, so that your home and your family remain safe from electrical fires.
