Can oxy acetylene torches run on just oxygen?
ok, im consider myself pretty good at chemistry. Me and my step dad are having a debate on whether or not a oxy acetylene torch can run on just oxygen after it has been ignited. i say it cant because logic says you need a fuel, as oxygen is not a fuel and it not flammable i see no way that a oxy acetylene torch can burn through steel on running purely on oxygen. please tell me who is right. Can a oxy acetylene torch burn through metal while only oxygen is been feed to it? i would also appreciate reasons for your answer as well. thanks!
You need fuel for all the reasons that you cite.
Acetylene is C2H2 and the reaction is
2C2H2 + 5O2 = 4CO2 + 2H2O. That generates the heat. without acetylene you are just blowing oxygen onto the steel.
