Can I install a shower with an oval shaped tub?
I am going to gut my bathroom and have been looking over new bath tubs. I like the look of the oval drop in type of tubs, but I am unsure if an integral shower as in a traditional bath will work with this type of tub. My instinct is that water will never drain properly, and disaster will follow. I do not have space for a separate shower area, so the tub/shower need to stay as one unit. thanks!
Do not try to incorporate a drop-in type of tub with a shower.
your instincts are correct. Disaster will follow (even if its over a long period of time.
Oval drop-in tubs are not designed to be used with a shower. The only (repeat only) way this would work safely is if you used a circular shower curtain such as old style claw-foot tubs used – Which would look kinda weird.
Otherwise, water will (repeat will) collect in corners and seep under the edge of the tub – No matter how much silicone you use.
You can get an oval tub that is designed to be tiled-in. More money now, but far (repeat far) less money down the road.
