Outdoor Extension
Need help connection an outdoor motion light to an extension cord – but am confused about the color of wires?
My extension cord has a white, black, and red wire. The light has red, white, and green wire. It seems that the white and blacks should go together but I always thought red was hot (red is dead) and green is ground. So should those wires go together?
You should NOT use an extension cord for outside wiring. I will help tell you how to do it. If it is a outdoor light that has a built in motion sensor than the wiring you describe for the light is correct (Red, White & Green). Now there is something wrong with your extension cord. All 120V extension cords have the following factory colors (Black, White Green). You obviously have a 240V extension cord or are mistaking an extension cord with an SO cord. Anyways if you want to make your light work anyways use White with white, Black with Green(After doing that phase the black wire with green tape, and red with red. Make sure that the wires on the other side of the cord are properly connected to a plug. To be honest with you its probably in your best interested to pay a licensed electrician to do this for you.
