Random orbital sanders: what is difference among Porter-Cable 390, 392, 394?
And what is the difference between the hook-and-look (velcro?) pad and
the pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) pad? Which type of pad is better? I want to use this to sand some metal cabinets prior to painting them with oil-based paints.
The difference is in the pad. Basically one is the hook and loop type that’s just like Velcro. They are more expensive than the PSA but the holder does not wear out as fast as the cushion on the PSA. The paper can also be changed more often without discarding the sandpaper if you change a lot between grits. I prefer the 330 for my woodworking with the PSA it is also less aggressive than the 390 and allows me to better creep up on that final 400 grit for a very smooth finish. I do have a 390 when I am taking off a lot of material or paint. It is much faster but leaves swirl marks.
