Armageddon just around the corner – or do we still have time for a cup of tea?
Asteroids impacts the earth with a certain frequency, has done so and continue to do so up into our days. It will do so in the future as well. Predictions amongst scientists are that we have a chance for a major impact around 2036.
In 2004, a 320 meter in diameter asteroid, 99942 Apophis (previously called 2004 MN4), achieved the highest impact probability of any potentially dangerous object. The probability of collision on April 13, 2029 is estimated to be as high as 1 in 17 by Steve Chesley of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, though the previously published figure was the slightly lower odds of 1 in 37, calculated in December 2004. Later observations showed that the asteroid will miss the earth by 25,600 km (within the orbits of communications satellites) in 2029, but its orbit will be altered unpredictably in a way which does not rule out a collision on April 13 or 14, 2036 or later in the century. These possible future dates have a cumulative probability of 1 in 45,000 for an impact in the 21st century. Below is shown the predicted potential impact sites of this asteroid.
This asteroid is around 5 times larger than the Barringer asteroid making an impact on earth earlier.
So why do we say it is possible that this object can hit us and make a catastrophy on earth?
Well, history has demonstrated impact craters of large asteroid objects, and we can see their remnants on earth to this day.

50,000 years ago, a huge iron-nickel meteorite, hurtling at about 40,000 miles per hour, struck the rocky plain of Northern Arizona with an explosive force greater than 20 million tons of TNT. The meteorite is estimated to have been about 60 meters across and weighing several hundred thousand tons, in less than a few seconds, left a crater 220 meters deep and over 1300 meters across. Large blocks of limestone, some the size of small houses were heaved onto the rim. Flat-lying beds of rock in the crater walls were overturned in fractions of a second and uplifted permanently as much as 50 meters.
Today the crater is 180 meters deep, and around 3.8 kilometers in circumference. Twenty football games could be played simultaneously on its floor, while more than two million spectators observed from its sloping sides.

If you want to understand the size of the crater, let us put the Barringer Crater in New York city and you can imagine the size for yourself.
How come the crater got this shape and size? If we look at how the asteroid hits the ground at tremendous speed and force, it makes an impact crater created by the hit itself, but also energy through heat that is generated in the impact. Therefor a an asteroid of the size predicted in 2036, will make a crater at least 10 times bigger than Barringer Crater looks like, and that would make the whole of the city be blown off the earth in under a second.

So drink your tea while you can, enjoy every sip of it, but do not rush, do not spoil the pleasure of a tea accompanied with a biscuit and good company.
Then occationally look into the sky and enjoy the blue sky with some small white dots on it. You might get a glimpse of something else as well.. who knows?
