Calculate the percent zinc in the penny ( Help, i keep getting the wrong answer)?
Modern pennies are composed of zinc coated with copper. A student determines the mass of a penny to be 2.485 and then makes several scratches in the copper coating (to expose the underlying zinc). The student puts the scratched penny in hydrochloric acid, where the following reaction occurs between the zinc and the (the copper remains undissolved):
Zn + 2HCl –> H2 + ZnCl2
(Assume all Zn dissolves)
The student collects the hydrogen produced over water at 25 C . The collected gas occupies a volume of 0.901L at a total pressure of 788 mmHg .
When you convert it:
788 mmHg = 1.037 atm
25C = 298.15 K
After stoichiometry and everything i keep getting around 2.49 g so i entered my answer is 100% and it was wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated
