Metric Set
Gift for Dad – wrenches: standard or metric?
I am planning on buying my dad some ratcheting wrenches for Christmas, but I don’t know if he would get more use out of a standard set or metric set? He does work on his own vehicles: a 68 Camero, a ’03 Silverado, and my moms ’02 Chevy van. Other than that, he does odd jobs around the house. Which set would be better?
Have tried gift certs in the past and Dad never gets to the store to spend them =) (or forgets he has them when he’s there!)
Nowadays, it pays to have both. Since your dad has a ’68 Camaro, it probably uses standard-sized wrenches, but the newer vehicles (and “projects around the house” such as bicycle repair, furniture assembly, and hanging ceiling fans) may use metrics. If you can get only one sizing now, I’d say go with the standard-sized and on the card you can say something like “for your vintage Camaro, because I know how much it means to you.” He’ll always remember those wrenches came from you.
And of course, Father’s Day will be here soon and you can score the metric wrenches for him then.
As for brands, I prefer Craftsman tools (haven’t broken a Craftsman tool yet and I put them through alot of stress) but any reputable brand will do.
Ratcheting wrenches are a good idea. I’m surprised it took this long for them to be invented!
