Marble Tiles
Looking for the proper method of installing marble tiles on kitchen countertop (plywood).?
I now have an old laminate contertop over plywood which I am removing. The marble tiles are a square foot each. ONe of my many Do it yourself books hows to place thin set over the plywood then a sheet of tile backer underlayment over same ,seal the joints with fiberglass tape then spread another thin set over it , then the tiles. Why not just place the tiles over a thin set on the plywood. Is the tile backer underlayment absolutelly necessary on a kitchen counter.
Water will soak through thetile believe it or not. If you place the tile directly on plywood, sooner or later the underlayment will get moldy and rot out on you. Also, you want a very sturdy undlerlayment so the counter does not sag. Personally, I would suggest two layers of cement backer board instead of one plywood and one cement backer board. This will give you a strong, sturdy foundation for the tile.
