does a reed switch work with any ol’ magnet?
will a refrigerator magnet activate a magnetic reed switch, or does it have to some special type of magnet?
You probably don’t want a lecture on gauss, teslas, and Faraday’s law (see Wikipedia if you do) so the short answer is, you have to try it. Get the reed you want to use and hook it up through an ohmmeter or any small load, and play away. You will find that there is a preferred orientation: the field lines of the magnet need to go along the axis of the reeds. That’s what makes them stick together. Also, the closer the better, so you’ll need a stronger magnet the further away you get. I find that refrigerator magnets are pretty wimpy, and barely hold themselves on the refrigerator. An old speaker has a nice magnet you can use. Old headphones have nice strong rare earth magnets; old hard drives have BIG strong magnets. You can also use electromagnets, but you of course have to power them. You might need 10-100 ampere-turns of wire; that is, 10 amps through 1 turn, or 100 milliamps through 100 turns of teeny wire.
