what does mAh mean in relation to a lithium ion battery?
The battery that came with my new camera says it’s 3.7V = 925mAh
Here’s another listed as a battery that’s advertised as acceptable for the camera, but the mAh value is less:
Olympus LI-50B Lithium-Ion Battery (3.7v, 740mAh)
I’ve seen others listed as 1000mAh. Pardon my ignorance, but will a higher/lower valve improve the camera’s response time? Or what does the mAh relate to?
mAh is “Milliamp Hour” which is basically how much power that battery can hold. The higher the mAh, the longer the battery will last.
If the manufacturer recommends a specific mAh, then I would not go below that, or it may not function, or possibly drain very quickly. Digital cameras use a high drain, which could be higher than the battery can put out.
Now, for the technical:
Milliamp Hours is the amount of milliamps of power that battery can deliver for one hour. So, your 925mAh battery will deliver 925 Milliamps for one hour before it is drained. If the camera requires 925 milliamps, then your battery should last for one hour (of course, differnet functions use different amounts of power, such as flash, or zooming (which is a motor))
If your camera, under “normal” use required 450 milliamps, then your battery will last for a bit over two hours. (450×2=900)
